THAILAND: Rama V, 1868-1910, AE token, ND (1895), Lec-3, N-310702, bronze issue, Mines of Khaotrée with initials of Joachim Grassi et Léon Tharet at bottom on reverse, an attractive mint state example, PCGS graded MS62 RB, ex Howard Daniel III Collection, originally purchased from Scott Semans. Token produced by Joachim Grassi and Léon Tharet for their request for a mining concession to the Siamese government in 1895. This type was published as being issued in 1880 by Lecompte, but more recently by Joyaux as issued in 1895.Joachim Grassi was an Austrian (later French) architect of Italian descent who worked for the Siamese government in the late nineteenth century. He was among the first European architects employed by King Chulalongkorn (Rama V), and contributed extensively to Siamese architecture during the time of its modernization.
