THRACE: Mesembria, AE19 (6.61g), ca. 250-175 BC, SNG Copenhagen 661, diademed female head right // Athena Promachos left, METAM / BPIANON, attractive dark green patina, Choice VF. This coin illustrates the archaic letter sampi, which resembles the letter T. It was used in some ancient Greek dialects to represent the sound [ss], written as double sigma in other dialects. It is rarely encountered today except for its use as a numeral (900).
