IMPORTANT NOTE - The Buyer's Premium is now $20 per lot or 20% of the hammer price, whichever amount is greater. However, we have also reduced opening bids on lower value items to adjust for the new Buyer's Premium structure, so all-in costs are still very close to what they were in the past. This change in fee structure will allow us to continue to offer coins valued at less than $100 in addition to our higher value offerings. Contact us with any questions.
TIBET: AR tangka dkarpo sa rpa (3.90g), ND (1953-54), Y-31, Second Monk issue, Choice XF. Traditionally, it is believed that these tangkas were distributed to monks on behalf of the 14th Dalai Lama in the late 1940s. The Tibetans referred to this type as Tangka dkarpo sa rpa ("new white tangka") in order to distinguish it from the normal gaden tangkas. This coin circulated for some time at the value of 5 srang which shows the high inflation rate which was prevailing in Tibet in the 20th Century. In the 19th Century 6 1/2 tangkas were equivalent to 1 srang which corresponded to slightly more than 37 grams of silver. Taking the circulating value of this "Monk" tangka as a base, 1 srang was equal to about 33 1/2 tangkas in 1953-54.
