TIBET: fantasy AR ¼ rupee (3.04g), ND (1904-12), Y-1, L&M-362, Szechuan-Tibet trade issue, portrait of the Chinese emperor Guang Xu derived from the British Indian rupee of Queen Victoria // vertical rosette at center, Chinese inscription, si chuan sheng zao ("made in Sichuan"), branches with cusps and flowers around, a feature also derived from the reverse of British Indian rupees, EF. This silver quarter rupee appears to have been struck from the same obverse dies as the following two fantasy coins struck in gold. The Karl Gabrisch Collection example sold at Baldwin's Hong Kong Auction 2005, lot 264 and another sold in Heritage Auctions 2009 May Long Beach Signature World & Ancient Coin Auction, lot 20645. A likely older fantasy type and rarely encountered in silver. It is unlikely that major grading companies will encapsulate this example so please keep that in mind when bidding.
