TIMURID: Abu Sa'id, 1451-1469, AR tanka (5.18g), Herat, AH861, A-2416.1, slightly off-center strike, boldly clear mint, date and ruler's name, VF, RRR, ex Ruud Schüttenhelm collection. There is little doubt that the date 861 is correct, as the reverse die is identical to that of some tankas of Sultan Ibrahim of Herat dated 861 (Zeno-107497). Herat 861 tankas are known in the name of either Sultan Muhammad (A-2424) or Shah Mahmud (A-2423.1), and this is the first reported Herat 861 coin in the name of Abu Sa'id, whose "reign" in Herat during that year must have been terribly brief. This piece is Abu Sa'id's first reported coin of Herat 861, probably unique.
