PESCADORES around and PATRIAE IMPERIVM, / SINENSIVM / GENTIBVS PACEM / DEDIT in exergue, BRONZE with cornucopia privy mark on edge, Unc. Amédée-Anatole-Prosper Courbet (1827-1885) was a French soldier. He entered the Navy in 1849 and became a midshipman on the Capricious. He rose to Ensign in 1854, then lieutenant in 1856; he was appointed frigate captain in 1866 and was promoted to vice-admiral in 1884. Governor of New Caledonia, he took part in the conquest of Tonkin and died on board the Bayard, in the bay of Makung (Pescadores Islands, Taiwan) on June 11, 1885.
