TOULOUSE: William IX, 1098-1100 & 1119-1127, AR denier (0.47g), Pierfitte-49, VVIELMO COM, cross, S in second quarter / +TOLOSA CIVI crosslet, P (or crozier), and two vertical lines forming a triangle, lovely Very Fine to Extremely Fine. Guillaume IX, Duke of Aquitaine, was the great grandson of Hugues Capet, grandfather of Eleanor of Aquitaine, and great grandfather of both Richard I the Lionheart and King John of England. He married Philippa of Toulouse, daughter of Guillaume IV of Toulouse in 1094, and in 1098 seized Toulouse and the surrounding county from Raymond IV, the hereditary Count of Toulouse. He was an ardent supporter of the troubadors of Aquitaine and Provence, and wrote several chansons of his own, which survive to the present.
