TRANSYLVANIA: Sigismund Báthory, 1581-1602, AR thaler, 1592, Dav-8803, SIGISMVNDVS BATHORI, half-length armored bust right, holding scepter and sword pommel / PRINCEPS TRANSSYLVANIA, crowned coat of arms with supporters, only one certified by NGC (April 2016), NGC graded EF45. Sigismund Báthory was elected Prince during his father's reign, but still being young upon his father's death, the government was headed by a regent. He attained his majority in 1588 and joined the fight against the Turks. Despite the anxiety this action caused in the principality, Sigismund was victorious over his political opponents. In 1595, along with Michael the Brave of Wallachia, his army was able to liberate Transylvania and Wallachia. He abdicated and regained the throne several times, but was ultimately defeated in battle in 1600 by Michael the Brave. He briefly regained the throne, only to be again defeated. He died in Prague in 1613.
