TURKEY: Abdul Mejid, 1839-1861, AE medal, AH1265, Erüreten-186; Pere-1094, 44mm, Ayasofya Tamir Madalyasi (Restoration of Hagia Sophia), 1848 bronze medal by Robertson, toughra of 'Abd al-Mejid within floral wreath // view of the church/mosque in Constantinople, toned with semi-prooflike fields, AU, RR. The restoration of the Hagia Sophia was ordered by Sultan Abdul Mejid and completed by 800 workers between 1847 and 1849, under the supervision of the Swiss-Italian architect brothers, Gaspare and Giuseppe Fossati. When the restoration was finished, the mosque was re-opened with ceremonial pomp on 13 July 1849.
