TURKEY: Murad V, 1876, AR 20 kurush, Kostantiniye, AH1293 year 1, KM-712, Y-22, an extremely rare mint-state example of this type, issued only for a few months with a mintage of 128,000 pieces, tied for the finest example at PCGS (top pop: 2/0) and higher than all examples at NGC, attractive light cartwheel luster, PCGS graded MS63. Murad V became the sultan on May 30 following a coup, which overthrew Abdul Aziz over his plan to make his own son the heir to the throne. However, Murad was himself deposed on August 30 on grounds of mental illness and replaced by his half-brother Abdul Hamid II after a reign of a mere 93 days. He would spend the rest of his life in confinement at the Ciragan Palace.
