UJJAIN: Anonymous, 2nd/1st century BC, AE square unit (3.10g), Pieper-695 (this piece), seated deity Lakshmi watered by 2 elephants (abhisheka Lakshmi) // Ujjain symbol; superb quality with full details, XF, RR, ex Wilfried Pieper Collection. Ujjain was the most abundant state in Ancient India for copper coins, with seemingly endless varieties, but truly impressive examples are rare. Although there are dozens, if not hundreds, of varieties depicting a deity, they are all rare and with popular demand. Inscribed pieces are almost all very rare, and only a few have ever been published. All types bear the Ujjain symbol on the reverse, which was also adopted by other states, especially the Satavahanas.
