UJJAIN: Anonymous, 2nd/1st century BC, AE square unit (3.86g), Pieper-346 (old volume, this piece), the deity Balarama, ass, and palm tree, Ujjain symbol above, 2 taurines and 1 swastika in the field // Ujjain symbol, lovely VF-XF, RRR, ex Wilfried Pieper Collection. From the consignor: "The coin illustrates in a wonderful way the mythical Hindu story of Balarama killing the ass-demon Dhenuka. When Krishna and his brother, Balarama approached a grove in hopes of picking fruit, Dhenuka, a demon who took the form of a donkey or ass, attacked Balarama who then defeated him, hurling him against a palm-tree."
