IMPORTANT NOTE - The Buyer's Premium is now $20 per lot or 20% of the hammer price, whichever amount is greater. However, we have also reduced opening bids on lower value items to adjust for the new Buyer's Premium structure, so all-in costs are still very close to what they were in the past. This change in fee structure will allow us to continue to offer coins valued at less than $100 in addition to our higher value offerings. Contact us with any questions.
UMAYYAD: AE fals (1.05g), Qandabil, AH117, A-Q204, kalima divided between obverse & reverse, the mint/date formula in the reverse margin; second known Islamic coin from the important trade town of Qandabil, now identified with Gandawah in the Baluchistan province of Pakistan, south of Sibi and east of Kalat; some very light porosity, bold VF. Second known example of this mint, first sold in our Auction 49, lot 128; this piece is much nicer. Qandabil was north of the port of al-Daybul along the trade route from the port en route to Iran. The style, calligraphy, and arrangement is identical to the copper fulus of al-Daybul, which are also dated AH117 and it is conceivable that the dies for both mints were engraved by the same die-cutter.
