Al-Mahfuza was founded by al-Hakam b. 'Awana about AH112, the second Umayyad governor of Sind. After a few years, al-Hakam replaced al-Mahfuza with his second foundation, the town of al-Mansura, across the river from al-Mahfuza, which became the capital of Sind for more than 300 years.
