UMAYYAD: 'Abd al-Malik, 685-705, AR dirham (1.66g), Fîl, AH80, A-126, Klat-515, Fîl is relatively available if dated AH79, but 80 is extremely rare (5 cited by Klat and only one on CoinArchives); clipped down to a much ligher weight for unknown reasons, VF, RRR. Walker & others have interpreted the mint as Fîl near Khwarizm, but that region was not yet conquered by the Muslims. An alternative reading is Qibâl, which was the contemporary name of a suburb of Isfahan (without the alif, which was often omitted at eastern mints, such as Hamadân & Dârâbjird, on early Islamic coins). In Arabic "fîl" means "elephant", and that could have been assigned to just about anywhere along the trade routes to Sind and India, of which some passed through Isfahan.
