UMAYYAD: Anonymous, ca. 705-715, AE fals (2.98g), Qaysariya, ND, A-A184, W-—. SNAT-199, Bone-1, superb strike, no weakness whatsoever, choice Very Fine, RRR, from an American collection.

The interpretation of the mint name has been questioned, as the spelling is peculiar for the Arabic name of Qaysariya (Ceasarea), closer to Qaythara, which might have been a local pronunciation of the city name during the Umayyad period. Most scholars, including Bone, Ilisch and myself, are convinced that Qaysariya is the likely location of this mint. The coins are stylistically very similar to contemporary fulus of Bayt Jibrin, Ludd, and Saffuriya, especially Saffuriya, which also bears the mint name at the top of the reverse. Thus a location at Qaysariya is geographically sensible. Note that the final letter of wahdahu has been omitted. Qaysariya, aka Qaythara, is the rarest of the Palestinian mints for the post-reform Umayyad copper coinage.
