UMAYYAD OF SPAIN: North African imitations, ca. 980-1010, AR fractional dirham (1.12g), NM, ND, A-O355, Fatimid style, imitating the silver dirhams of al-'Aziz (975-996), obverse inner legend is corrupt, replacing the name of Hisham with something that is perhaps stylized al-'izzatu lillah (outer legend unread)' standard Fatimid style reverse but without the phrase 'ali wali Allah; probably struck by one of the North African tribes allied with the Umayyads of Spain but imitating the Fatimid currency used in that region; unpublished, VF-EF, RRR. Tonegawa illustrates a few probably North African silver coins imitating Fatimid hosts.
