UMAYYAD: 'Umar, 717-720, AR dirham (2.82g), "al-Kufa", AH100, A-133, Klat—, very unusual type, not illustrated elsewhere, probably unpublished variety, choice VF, RRR. The mint name is clearly al-kufa, which had closed in AH82, then reopened for copper and silver in AH100. However, the calligraphy on both sides of this coin is utterly different from the Kufan issues of 100-102, but is precisely the calligraphy of the Sijistan mint. Perhaps when the al-Kufa mint reopened, they acquired their first dies from the engraver of Sijistan. Alternatively, the coin might have been produced in Sijistan, with an obverse die on which the engraver inadvertently engraved the wrong mint name.
