UMAYYAD: al-Walid I, 705-715, AR dirham (2.89g), Sijistan, AH90, A-128, Klat-432b, some original luster, About Uncirculated, ex. Robert Pelletreau collection. Umayyad dirhams of Sijistan (modern Sistan) always bear distinctive calligraphy, differing from virtually all other Umayyad mints, a distinction that would be maintained on most coinage of Sijistan, including its two principal cities of Zaranj and Nimruz, until the 12th/18th century. The regions flanks the border between Iran, Afghanistan & Pakistan, with its former capital, Nimruz, now just a few miles inside Afghanistan.
