UNITED NATIONS: AR medal (280.00g), 1988, 80mm large silver medal by artists Zonelli and Tesi for the FAO Locust Control and Emergency Operations; high-relief design on the obverse of locust swarm // the reverse features a calendar, struck in sterling silver and contains 8.33 troy ounces of pure silver, numbered 39 on edge, with COA and original case of issue, Unc. FAO calendar medals were issued between 1981 and 2004. Each medal promotes a theme that communicates FAO ideals or recognizes significant milestones. Most calendar medals are 80mm in diameter and issued in bronze and silver. Each medal was issued with a Certificate of Authenticity and an informational brochure. The 1988 locust plague began as desert locust swarms bred in northern Africa, crossed the Sahara, and invaded all the Sahelian countries from Mauritania to Sudan. The swarms subsequently spread to northwest Africa and the Near East. The plague also resulted in locusts crossing the Atlantic and reaching the Caribbean for the first time in recorded history.
