UNITED STATES: 1 cent, 1864, PCGS graded AU58, Indian Head Copper-Nickel type. The hoarding of cents continued unabated during 1864, and various merchants had already resorted to issuing thin, copper tokens of cent size to make change. Unlike the federal issues, which had contained nearly one cent's worth of metal before the war, these tokens were worth just a fraction of their nominal value and circulated freely. Congress took notice of their success and passed a new act replacing the copper-nickel cent with one of bronze that was similar to the ubiquitous tokens.
