UNITED STATES: 3-medal proof set, 1965, Gardiner's Island Pattern Trial Proof medals struck in three metallic alloys, in original plastic sleeves and set in original Franklin Mint case of issue, set of 3 medals. During the Franklin Mint's search for substitute metals for U.S. silver coinage they struck and distributed a cased three-piece set of dollar-size pieces called "Pattern Trial Proofs." These were designed by former U.S. Mint director Gilroy Roberts and depicted historic Gardiner’s Island, located near the eastern tip of Long Island, N.Y., and its colony of fishing hawks or ospreys. Settled in 1639, the island remained in the possession of the Gardiner family into modern times. Roberts’ design featured an dramatic osprey in flight with a captured fish and the Gardiner Arms with the new F/M mintmark and the joined GR monogram of the artist that had first appeared on the Kennedy half dollar. The Franklin Mint describes these alloys as "NICON, Cupro-nickel with Columbian; STERLING PLUS, 'Nickel-Silver' core sandwiched between two layers of Sterling-Silver (.925 fine); and FRANKLINIUM I, Pure Nickel inpregnated with Columbian."
