John Flanagan was also the designer of the Washington Quarter.Formed in 1857, the Numismatic and Antiquarian Society of Philadelphia was a non-profit organization for the study of numismatics and antiquarian research. Prominent members included some big names of the era, including Joseph Mickley and the man depicted on this medal, Dr. D.G. Brinton. Meetings were often held in members' homes, where coins and medals were displayed and topics on a variety of issues were discussed.
