UNITED STATES: AE medal, 1812, Julian-NA-4, 65mm bronze medal by Moritz Fürst for the Victory of Captain William Bainbridge in the Naval Battle of the USS Constitution vs. HMS Java; GULIELMUS BAINBRIDGE PATRIA VICTISQUE LAUDATUS around bust of Captain William Bainbridge facing right, star and FURST. F. below bust // PUGNANDO above USS Constitution at right with full mast with HMS Java at left without masts amid wreckage, INTER CONST. NAV. AMERI. ET JAV. NAV. ANGL. DIE XXIX DECEM. MDCCCXII in exergue, at bottom FURST. F., Almost Unc to Unc. On December 29, 1812, while cruising off the coast of Brazil, USS Constitution’s masthead lookout sighted two ships on the horizon. Constitution, under the command of Commodore William Bainbridge, stood toward them, and the larger of the two, HMS Java, tacked toward the Americans. After a fierce engagement, HMS Java was devastated and set ablaze. Moritz (Fuerst) Fürst (1782–1840), was an early U.S. medalist. Fürst was born near Pressburg (Bratislava) of Jewish-Slovak origin, and after immigrating to the United States in 1807, he worked as an engraver for the United States Mint in Philadelphia from 1812 to 1839. He received quick recognition for his patriotic commemoratives and portraits. This medal was struck officially from original dies circa 1817.
