UNITED STATES: AE medal, 1861, Julian CM-2, Baker-279A, 30mm bronze medal by Anthony C. Paquet, the Washington Oath of Allegiance Medal; "THE CONSTITUTION IS SACREDLY OBLIGATORY ON ALL" around bust of Washington right // U.S. MINT. / OATH OF ALLEGIANCE / TAKEN BY THE / OFFICERS AND WORKMEN / SEPT. 2. 1861 / JAS. POLLOCK, DIR., all within laurel wreath, a later restrike with leaf missing in wreath on reverse and without designer's name below truncation on obverse., EF, R5 (Rulau & Fuld). This medal was originally struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1861 after the defection by the New Orleans Mint employees of that year to join with the South during the beginning months of the Civil War. Apparently Mint Director James Pollack believed that taking an oath would dispel southern sympathizers, and had Paquet engrave the dies with the obverse showing Washington's bust facing right.
