UNITED STATES: AE medal, 1876, Julian-CM-11c, Proof, 58mm, 104.1g, Commemorating the Centennial of American Independence by William Barber, IN COMMEMORATION OF THE HUNDREDTH ANNIVERSARY OF AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE / ACT OF CONGRESS JUNE 1874, Liberty standing facing, placing laurel wreaths upon heads of Industry and Art, kneeling right and left, respectively, and surrounded by their attributes; 1876 in exergue // THESE UNITED COLONIES ARE, AND OF RIGHT OUGHT TO BE, FREE AND INDEPENDENT STATES., Liberty rising right from ground, holding sword and extending hand toward thirteen stars (the colonies) within sun rays; 1776 in exergue, attractive glossy brown surfaces with only the faintest hairlines (mainly on reverse) with original plush display box. A prolific designer of medals and coins, London-born Barber was the Chief Engraver at the United States Mint from 1869 to 1879.
