UNITED STATES: AE token, 1838, HT-81, Low-54, PCGS graded AU58+, Hard-Times antislavery type, AM I NOT A WOMAN & A SISTER around female slave in chains, date below // UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around central wreath, LIBERTY and date within, letter N of UNITED is retrograde, as always. This token was struck by Gibbs, Gardner & Company of Belleville, New Jersey in 1837 (although dated 1838) during the Financial Panic of 1837. The token primarily circulated in New York. U.S. Mint Director Patterson moved quickly to suppress the circulation of this type, and it is apparent that by late December 1837, he had succeeded in part. No further ads for the Female Slave tokens appeared in the American Anti-Slavery Society weekly or in other journals.
