UNITED STATES: AR medal (19.31g), 1925, Choice EF, 30mm octagonal silver medal for the Norse American Centennial by James Earle Fraser and struck at the US Mint in Philadelphia, thick variety, Viking warrior in horned helmet standing facing with sword and shield with head slightly left and dragon ship in background with NORSE AMERICAN CENTENNIAL above and a flanking "1825 - 1925" // Viking ship at full sail right divides legend AUTHORIZED BY / CONGRESS OF THE / UNITED - STATES / OF - AMERICA with A.D.1000 in exergue, nice original tone, plain edge. The 1925 Norse American medals were struck to commemorate the anniversary of the arrival of the Norwegian sloop "Restauration", which brought Norwegian immigrants to the United States a century earlier. The medals were struck in many different metals and sizes. The two most common are the thick silver, with a mintage of some 33,750 pieces, and the thin silver, with a mintage of 6,000.
