Bryan Dollars are large, commemorative silver medals from the 1896 and 1900 U.S. presidential campaigns of William Jennings Bryan. They were created as satirical or political tokens to highlight the large, cumbersome size a silver coin would need to be to match the value of a gold dollar. William Jennings Bryan ran on a "Free Silver" platform, arguing that the U.S. economy should be backed by both silver and gold to help relieve working-class and farming debt. The most famous versions were manufactured by the Gorham Manufacturing Company in New York as was this example.
