UNITED STATES: Political medal in silver, 1896, FREE COINAGE 16 1896 // blank, except for the manufacturer's code PAT APPLD FOR; associated with the 1896 presidential election, with original loop for suspension, Fine to VF. William Jennings Bryan, Democrat-Populist party, lost the 1896 presidential election to the Republican William McKinley. Bryan ran with his claim to restore the 16 to 1 relationship between gold and silver, even when the actual market price of silver had slipped to a ratio of something like 30 to 1.
