UNITED STATES: Rhode Island, AE token, 1779, KM-Tn28a, Betts-563, Rhode Island Ship Token, wreath below variety, boldly struck with chocolate-brown fields, PCGS graded AU53. The origin and significance of the Rhode Island Ship Token, dated 1779, have long been debated. The obverse shows the flagship of British Admiral Lord Richard Howe at anchor while the reverse depicts the retreat of American forces from Rhode Island in 1778. It is now thought the idea for this token was conceived during the second half of 1779, sometime after Spain joined France in declaring war on Britain. Its purpose was propaganda - to keep the Netherlands from getting involved in the war in support of the American revolutionaries. The token was minted in England for distribution throughout the Netherlands, most probably, during the second half of 1780.
