UNITED STATES: SET of 20 medals, the very scarce 1973-76 Franklin Mint "Official Coin-Medals of Indian Tribal Nations" set spanning two volumes (Volume 1 and Volume 2), each containing ten .999 pure silver 25.4 gram medals with 14.40 troy ounces of pure silver in total. The set contains the following types; Mescalero Apache, Choctaw, Creek, Seminole, Cherokee, Kalispel, Chickasaw, Three Affiliated Tribes, Oneida, Cocopah, Eskimo, Wichita, Ottawa, Modoc, Pawnee, Hualapai, Coushatta, Otoe-Missouria, and Potawatomi; a lovely set in original Franklin Mint cases of issue, retail value $1500, set of 20 medals. Each coin-medal in this collection honors the history, culture and people of the tribe it represents and was designed in close cooperation with the appropriate tribal leaders. Although the total mintage was 15,000 sets, during the massive "silver melts" of the late 1970s and 1980s, an unquantifiable number of these sets were destroyed for bullion, making surviving intact sets much rarer than the original mintage implies.
