UNTIED STATES: Federal Contract Coinage, AE cent, 1787, KM-EA31.2, "Fugio" type, 4 cinquefoils variety, PCGS graded EF40. These were definitely minted in New Haven, Connecticut. Some also speculate them being minted in Rupert, Vermont, but this is not certain. All of the original strikes are dated "1787" but most speculate that these were indeed minted in 1788. In 2021 a team of numismatists re-examined the historical evidence about the Fugio cents in order to determine whether they should be considered a federal rather than a pre-federal coinage. On January 3, 2022 the Professional Coin Grading Services (PCGS) published this research which concluded without any doubt that the Fugio cents were indeed a federal issue, and actually the first coinage of the new republic.
