VATICAN: Leo XIII, 1878-1903, silvered medal, The Jerusalem Pilgrim's Cross (Signum Sacri Itineris Hierosolymitani), with original ribbon and hanger of issue, AU, ex Joseph E. Lang Collection. This medal was instituted by the Holy See by Pope Leo XIII on May 2, 1901. It is awarded to Catholic pilgrims who complete a pious journey to the sacred places of the Holy Land. The medal is shaped like a Jerusalem Cross, consisting of a large central cross potent with four smaller crosslets tucked into each quadrant. The Ribbon: It features a silk ribbon configured with a central red strip split by narrow light blue vertical stripes, while the outer borders are bounded by the yellow-and-white colors of the Vatican Holy See. The hanger bar at the top of the ribbon reads "JERUSALEM." The obverse bears a profile effigy of Pope Leo XIII, ringed by the inscription "LEO XIII P.M. CREAVIT AN. MCM" (Pope Leo XIII created this medal in 1900).The crossbar inscriptions clockwise from the left arm, reads "CHRISTI AMOR CRUCIFIXI TRAXIT NOS" (The love of Christ Crucified has drawn us). The Biblical relief scenes in each of the four large cross corners contains a detailed vignette illustrating the early life and ministry of Jesus: the Annunciation, Nativity, Baptism, and the Eucharist. The reverse features a symbolic image depicting the Resurrection of Christ. The crossbar inscriptions clockwise from the left reads "SIGNUM SACRI ITINERIS HIEROSOL" (Sign of the holy voyage of Jerusalem). The Biblical passion scenes in the four corners portray the suffering and Passion of Christ: Jesus praying in the garden of Gethsemane, His scourging/flagellation, the crowning with thorns, and the Crucifixion.
