VIET NAM: Thieu Tri, 1841-1847, 60 cash (36.89g), B-175, standard obverse, 8 characters on reverse, 52mm, VF. In 1837 a new series of large heavy cash (phan or van) coins were begun. They were valued at 60 van and weighed 25 to 30 grams each and are basically commemoratives as each contained a poetic verse on the reverse of 4 or 8 characters. They were discontinued at end of the reign of Tu Duc in 1883, but privately made imitations were produced until the mid-20th century. This is a heavier than usual example, but metallic composition, casting style and adjustment marks appear contemporary.
