VIETNAM: NGUYEN DYNASTY (DAI NAM): Minh Mang, 1820-1841, AE large cash (23.08g), B-144, 51mm, luc phù không tu, tam su doàn trí ("The six talismans have no words, the three masters are united in wisdom"), pierced at top & bottom for suspending cord & tassels, F-VF. Beginning in 1837, a new series of large cash coins valued at 60 van were issued during the reigns of Minh Mang, Thieu Tri, and Tu Duc. The reverses have four- or eight-character poetic legends, most of which are derived from Confucianist and classical Chinese literature. These large cash coins were initially intended as presentation pieces or royal rewards, but many found their way into circulation.
