WALLACHIA: Radu III cel Frumos, 1462-1473, AR ducat (0.46g), MBR-264, shield in center, + IWPADVL BOHBODA GNb // eagle standing left on helmet, its head reverted, cross behind, IW PADVL BOHBODA, lightly wavy flan with a few faint scratches, Choice VF, RRR. Radu III cel Frumos (the Handsome, the Fair) was the younger brother of Vlad III Tepes (the Impaler, also popularly known as Dracula). As boys, both brothers grew up as hostages in the Ottoman court, where they were educated in Turkish, Persian, the Qur'an and other subjects. While Vlad III remained Christian and was eventually sent back to take the Wallachian throne following the death of their father, Vlad II Dracul, Radu converted to Islam and remained loyal to Sultan Mehmet II, with whom Radu had a very intimate relationship. Hence when relations soured between Mehmet II and Vlad III, the sultan personally led an army of more than 150,000 to install Radu as the ruler of Wallachia. While the initial invasion did not lead to Vlad III's defeat, his harsh policies toward his subjects and a well-earned bloodthirsty reputation led Wallachians to defect to his more diplomatic younger brother. Radu would rule for the next 11 years while Vlad was captured by Matthias Corvinus of Hungary and imprisoned until Radu's death. The coinage of Radu III is extremely rare. There are no examples on ACSearch or CoinArchives.
