WARRING STATES: AE garment hook (40.61g), ca. 4th-3rd century BC, 27 x 44mm, with a button knob on the back and a hook at the end, the front decorated with the head of a taotie, likely made in the early Warring States period, VF, ex Ilse & Rolf Braun Collection. A taotie is a mythical man-eating creature with large, protruding ears. It is commonly found on bronze vessels and other objects during the Shang and Zhou Dynasties.Rolf (1937-2016) and Ilse Braun were the founder and the secretary of the European Collectors of Primitive Money (EUCOPRIMO), a well-known organization in the field of ethnographic currency. Based in Germany, the group meets twice a year and issues a yearly magazine. Rolf and Ilse also co-authored Opium-Gewichte, one of the most referenced works on Burmese opium weights.
