WARRING STATES: LOT of 4 items, group of Ming 'knife money', broken (1), 'bridge money' broken tip (2), and another with very light natural crack, retail value $150, lot of 4 items, ex Matthew Chang Collection. Ming knives take their name from the character on the obverse, which has traditionally been read as ming. Other proposals for the reading have been yi, ju, and zhao. Though colloquially known as 'bridge money,' these bronze 'bridges' are formally known only as funerary objects designed to imitate the stone chimes of the bianqing. Bridge Money pieces have now been dated to circa 306-221 BC and are accepted by many - but not all - Chinese numismatists as actual coins of Ba and Shu States during the Warring States period.
