IMPORTANT NOTE - The Buyer's Premium is now $20 per lot or 20% of the hammer price, whichever amount is greater. However, we have also reduced opening bids on lower value items to adjust for the new Buyer's Premium structure, so all-in costs are still very close to what they were in the past. This change in fee structure will allow us to continue to offer coins valued at less than $100 in addition to our higher value offerings. Contact us with any questions.
WARRING STATES: State of Jin, 500-400 BC, AE spade money (26g), H-2.182, hollow-handled pointed shoulder type, uninscribed variety, one tip chipped, a superb example with attractive patina! graded 'genuine' by GBCA Grading Company, VF, ex Dr. Dirk Löer Collection.

NOTE: We have added additional photos of this lot on September 2, 2025 to show the chipped tip of the spade, which was not mentioned in the printed catalog.

Spades of this type are found in Northeast Henan and Shanxi, the territory of the Duchy of Jin, later to become Zhao. They are held to be somewhat later in date than the square shouldered spades. Their shape seems to be designed for ease of tying together in bundles, rather than deriving from any particular agricultural instrument.
