IMPORTANT NOTE - The Buyer's Premium is now $20 per lot or 20% of the hammer price, whichever amount is greater. However, we have also reduced opening bids on lower value items to adjust for the new Buyer's Premium structure, so all-in costs are still very close to what they were in the past. This change in fee structure will allow us to continue to offer coins valued at less than $100 in addition to our higher value offerings. Contact us with any questions.
WARRING STATES: State of Jin, 500-400 BC, AE spade money (29.2g), H-2.182, hollow-handled pointed shoulder type, without inscription, graded 'Genuine' by GBCA Grading Company, broken at the neck and, usual green and light brown patina, VF, ex Dr. Dirk Löer Collection, ex Beijing Poly Auction 8th Anniversary Spring Auction, Lot 10639 (3788).

This type of spade has pointed shoulders and feet and a long hollow handle. There are three parallel lines on the obverse and reverse with occasional inscriptions. They are found in Northeast Henan and Shanxi Provinces, the territory of the Duchy of Jin, later to become the State of Zhao. They are held to be somewhat later in date than the square-shouldered spades. Their shape seems to be designed for ease of tying together in bundles, rather than deriving from any particular agricultural instrument.

NOTE: We have added additional photos of this lot on September 2, 2025.
