WEST FRIESLAND: Dutch Republic, AV ducat, 1729, KM-93.2, recovered from the Vliegenthart shipwreck, in attractive custom plastic promotional 6-1/8 x 3-1/8" lucite holder, somewhat wavy flan, very lustrous, Unc. The Vliegenthart, a Dutch East India Company merchant ship, left the Netherlands in February 1735 with a treasure of gold coins and smuggled silver coins. As the ship left Dutch waters, it and its sister ship Anna Catharina were hit by a gale and were driven onto a sandbar, sustaining severe damage. The Vliegenthart slipped off the sandbar and sunk in 60 feet of water. All hands were lost. A salvage operation was immediately launched, but only a few items were recovered. The salvage was deemed too dangerous and the ship was abandoned for almost 250 years. It was rediscovered in 1981, when modern salvage was begun. The cargo of ducats, which were all dated 1729, and silver riders were recovered over the next decade.
