WESTERN LIAO: Anonymous, 1128-1218, iron large cash (19.0g), Zeno-18589, "Beiting Big Iron Money", undeciphered script, graded 'Genuine' by GBCA Grading Company, Fine, ex Hans Mondorf Collection. Beiting Big Iron Money (Bei tíng dà tie qián), also known as "Xiliao Big Iron Money", is named because it is mainly unearthed near the site of the former city of Beiting in Jimusar County, Xinjiang, China. The script on this coin is possibly Tocharian. During the 6th to 9th centuries this script (derived from the Indo-European Brahmi alphabet) was in use at sites as Kucha, Turfan, and Karashar (Xinjiang). It is also possible that the script is Kidan (Qidan). More research on this rare type is needed which is tentatively assigned to the Western Liao. The ancient city of Beiting was the headquarters of the Beiting Protectorate during the 8th century. It was later known as Beshbalik (Beshbaliq) and became one of the capitals of the Uyghur Khaganate and then the Kingdom of Qocho (Kara-Khoja), the later which became a Western Liao vassal state in 1128 during the reign of Bilge Tekin.
