WESTERN LIAO: Uncertain Ruler, AE cash (5.28g), ca. 12th century, Zeno-330709, H-, imitating Zhou Yuan Tong Bao of the Later Zhou Dynasty (951-960) in expressive and wild calligraphy, large dot below on reverse, VF, RR. This is the first example of this type we have handled. See Belyaev & Sidorovich (2023) for an in-depth discussion on this series ("Apropos of the coins with the legend zhou-yuan tong-bao from the finds in Kyrgyzstan" in Revue de la Société de Numismatique Asiatique, vol. 47, pp. 37-44), as well as Zeno for an overview of Western Liao coinage (http://www.zeno.ru/showgallery.php?cat=9299).The Western Liao (1124-1218) dynasty, also known as Qara Khitay state, was founded by Yelü Dashi, a member of the Liao royal family, who led the remnants of the Liao Dynasty to Central Asia after fleeing from the Jurchen conquest of their homeland in the North and Northeast of modern-day China. The empire was usurped by the Naimans under Küchlük in 121 and was finally destroyed by the Mongol Empire in 1218.
