WESTERN LIAO: ca. 11th/12th century, AE charm/pendant (44.21g), primitive floral design, with a lotus bloom in center circle, surround by a quatrefoil with curved arcs // phoenix & dragon, with attached square loop for suspension, VF, RRR. The Western Liao or Qara Khitai, officially the Great Liao dynasty, was a Sinicized Khitan empire in Central Asia. The well-known version with horseman obverse and the same reverse, also with attached square loop, is stylistically somewhat similar and about the same size (Zeno-1159 & 89456), also with very primitive engraving. These are usually assigned to Western Liao dynasty, and are not found in China, but in Central Asia, this example reportedly from Kazakhstan.
