YEMEN: QU'AITI SULTANATE: Awadh b. Umar, 1866-1909, AE 1/3 khamsiya (1.69g), al-Mukalla, AH1315, KM-, ruler's name in Arabic (al-sultan 'awadh bin 'umar al-qu'aiti) surrounded by his name in English, "HH Sultan Nawaz Jung" // mint & date formula, unpublished and unique, VF, RRRR. The style and date are similar to the so-called 5 khumsi coin of this series, also dated AH1315 (KM-45), though the legends are shorter and the arrangement is different, to fit its much smaller size (17.4mm). Vladimir Suchy has demonstrated that the correct reading of the KM-45 denomination is "khamsiya", equivalent to the British Indian ¼ anna, known in the gulf region as a baisa (Indian "paisa"), still the currency in Oman. The khamsiya typically weighs about 5g, and that suggests that this unique coin is 1/3 khamsiya, which would correspond to the British Indian 1/12 anna.
