ZANGIDS OF SYRIA: Nur al-Din Mahmud, 1146-1174, AV dinar (5.28g), al-Qahira, AH567, A-1849, Balog-1, struck under Saladin in the same "bull's eye" design as the last Fatimid caliph al-'Adid (who died earlier in the same year!), but citing the Abbasid caliph al-Hasan (= al-Mustadi) in the obverse center, and the Zangid ruler Mahmud b. Zangi in the reverse center, superb bold strike, choice EF, RR.

This type was struck by order of Saladin but without his name, who was made the vizier to the last Fatimid caliph al-'Adid in 1169 and quickly became the de facto ruler of Egypt. It thus seemed only a matter of formality that when al-'Adid perished two years later (supposedly after a short illness), Saladin became the sultan of Egypt and proclaimed the country to be under the caliphate of the Abbasid al-Mustadi. For formal reasons, he recognized the Syrian Zangid sultan Mahmud as his overlord until the latter's death in 1174, after which he finally ordered coins be issued in his own name.
