ZHOU: Spring-Autumn Period, 770-475 BC, AE 'fish money' (11.44g), 98mm, cast in the shape of fish with hole for threading (as made), dashed horizontal lines on both sides, made by various "barbarian tribes" (yí) along the Yellow River during the Shang and early Zhou Dynasties, F-VF, ex Ilse & Rolf Braun Collection. These types are mentioned in Coole, Jen, and other references with ambiguous statements regarding their possible use as money. Their frequent presence in ancient tombs perhaps suggests a funerary purpose.Rolf (1937-2016) and Ilse Braun were the founder and the secretary of the European Collectors of Primitive Money (EUCOPRIMO), a well-known organization in the field of ethnographic currency. Based in Germany, the group meets twice a year and issues a yearly magazine. Rolf and Ilse also co-authored Opium-Gewichte, one of the most referenced works on Burmese opium weights.
