ZHOU: Spring-Autumn Period, 770-475 BC, AE 'fish money' (27.45g), cf. Zeno-228272, 106 x 30mm, cast in the shape of fish with hole for threading (as made), scales on both sides, made by various "barbarian tribes" (yí) along the Yellow River during the Shang and early Zhou Dynasties, Fine, ex Dr. Dirk Löer Collection. These types are mentioned in Coole, Jen, and other references with ambiguous statements regarding their possible use as money. Their frequent presence in ancient tombs perhaps suggests a funerary purpose.
